Clinical Research

Clinical research is an important component of medical progress. Only drugs tested with extensive, pre-clinical, i.e. tests not conducted on humans, as well as clinical studies (i.e. tests conducted on humans) may be launched on the market, and thus prescribed or sold.

Two different types of clinical study can be identified. First, the drug is checked for compatibility and safety. The item or drug to be tested is initially given in very small dose and possible side effects are precisely registered. A dose is increased only if the side effects detected allow it. For this type of drug testing, participants must be healthy. In such a case, the participants are referred to as subjects. Subsequent studies test how effective the drug is in fighting a disease. For this type of examination, participants are sought who are suffering from the specific disease. In such cases the participants are referred to as patients.

All studies are subject to certain requirements that differ from study to study - so-called inclusion and exclusion criteria. For example, this involves the age of the participant, certain prior illnesses, or whether an equal number of men and women can participate. If all requirements are fulfilled, the patient may participate in the study.

All examinations and treatments within the scope of a clinical study are free of charge. In addition, a doctor involved in a study always takes sufficient time to clarify any and all questions you may have as a subject or a patient. Participation in a study enables you to cooperate actively in new medical developments and to benefit in health terms. You receive special medical care and the therapies tested often involve completely new concepts which may enhance existing therapy.

Reasonable reimbursement is also mostly paid for the varyingly extensive studies.
